Until religious freedom was established in an increasing number of European nations in the nineteenth century, suppression and persecution of religious minorities were among the factors involved in immigration to America.
Many Christian Separatists believed that the establishment of Zion would introduce the millennium during which the members of their specific religious community would reign with Christ for a thousand years. Some believed that the place was important, that Christ would establish his kingdom in the Holy Land. Others believed that the New Jerusalem would come somewhere else, a location usually revealed through a vision or prophecy. For many, Zion was not necessarily a holy place, but a holy community. In America we find combinations of these interpretations of the Biblical Scriptures.
