"Young People's Ordinary Theologizing: A Challenge to Academic and Ecclesial Theology"
In studies of ‘ordinary theology,’ a gap between the theologies of lay churchgoers on the one hand, and the more official ecclesiastical or academic theology on the other hand, is commonly identified. A particular focus for the present talk is to explore how normative discrepancies are negotiated among ordinary theologians, and what this implies for academic theology. We begin by identifying three different modes of how negotiation of normative discrepancies is conducted in previous publications in the field of ‘ordinary theology.’ Building on an empirical study of how young churchgoers theologize on the topic of sin, then, we opt for an approach to the gap described above that acknowledges the condition of ‘distributed normativity’ (Afdal) not only concerning the normativity of certain doctrines and interpretations of faith but also as to how normativity is being negotiated.
