Approaches to teaching Roma slavery to prevent anti-Roma racism
The 500-year enslavement of Roma in territories of contemporary Romania is a silenced chapter in European history and is consequently hardly addressed in education across Europe. In this presentation, we will draw on interviews with educational stakeholders in Romania, and own experiences from creating extracurricular activities about Roma slavery. With curriculum-development in mind, we will discuss how Roma slavery produced racism, and the importance of lifting both Roma and non-Roma resistance in the teaching of Roma history.
The research presented is part of the RCN funded research project MEMOROBIA: https://mf.no/memorobia
