"Formal Canon, Actual Canon and Super-canon: Using the Translation Lens for Understanding Canonization in Norwegian Islam"

Which books and texts are regarded as canonical among Muslims in Norway? The older Islamic classics, or newer works? In an ongoing project, Olav Elgvin investigates this by looking at the practice of translation, on the assumption that works which are chosen for translation are often regarded as particularly important. He will share findings from his ongoing fieldwork, and ask what these canonization processes reveal about social change in Muslim communities in Norway.
