"Mark’s Ending: Manuscript Evidence and the State of Research"
The issue of the ending of Mark’s Gospel has been subject to heated debates down centuries. Until recently, modern scholarship generally assumed that the topic has been exhausted and no stone was left unturned. However, the digital revolution that enabled scholars to access thousands of digitised manuscripts has problematised our long-held assumptions. This took place by correcting misinformation and proposing new evidence which have inevitably prompted us to question the very system of thought in which evidence is processed. What do the manuscripts actually say about Mark’s ending, and what did the scribes behind these manuscripts see in their exemplars? How did they testify to the evidence that we no longer have access to? Are these endings actually endings? Are we even asking the right questions?
Monier has been working for four years, so far, on pursuing manuscript evidence across several ancient languages, transcribing and analysing paratexts and marginal notes that the scribes left us next to Mark’s ending and he is currently working on his new book in which he analyses new manuscripts witnesses and tries to provide answers to these questions.
Join Monier in the journey behind his forthcoming monograph: When Jesus Rose Early: Texts and Paratexts of Mark 16 in Newly Studied Manuscripts.
