Student housing
As an exchange student at MF, you can apply for housing through The Foundation for Student life in Oslo (SiO).
We recommend that you apply for student housing as early as possible when you apply for an exchange at MF. You apply online through SiOs web pages, where you will also find more information on the different housing options, rules and regulations. SIO has many housing units in Oslo and the surrounding areas. Most international students live at Sogn, Ullevål or Kringsjå. These are the largest student villages.
Housing application deadline
For the Fall semester: 01. June
For the Spring semester: 01. November
Housing contract
Housing contracts for exchange students are normally issued for the entire semester, from August 1 to December 31, and January 1 to July 31.
You have to follow the deadlines to answer the housing offer given by SIO and to sign your contract and pay the deposit. All of this can be done electronically via "My pages" (more information will be given from SIO). It is important that you read the contract and appendix 1 available on SIOs webpages carefully.
If you for some reason want to move out before your contract expires, you need to give SIO notice two or three months ahead of time (depending on type of accomodation).
Deposit
All students who rent housing must pay a deposit. This will be returned after you have moved out, on condition that there is no damage to the room/furniture, that the room has been properly cleaned, and all rent has been paid.
The deposit must be paid before arrival to Norway, within one week after you get an offer from SIO. It is done electronically through "My Pages" (you will get access to this from SIO), and can be paid via credit card or via regular international bank transfer.
How to get there
Make sure to check www.sio.no/en/housing/moving-in before you arrive, in case there are changes in where to pick up your keys, etc. We strongly recommend that you plan your arrival to Oslo so that you arrive within opening hours so that you can get your key for your housing.
Useful information
All units have wired internet connection, which is included in the rent. If you wish to have wireless internet you will have to get a wireless router yourself.
However, please note that curtains, pillows, sheets, blankets, reading lamps and kitchen utensils are not provided. There are frequent buses to IKEA outside of town, where you can get what you need at reasonable prices.
ALL questions on housing must be directed to SIO, not MF.
