Power and resistance SAM2085
This course will give you insight into the relationship between power and resistance, in particular how power structures are resisted from below at different geographical levels (local, national, regional and global). The course will present key theoretical perspectives on resistance and social movements, that can be used to analyze empirical cases from different parts of the world. Examples include climate change, migration, sustainable development, populism/nationalism, poverty reduction, and struggles for rights and recognition.
The selected cases might vary from one semester to another, based on current affairs and ongoing research at MF. Examples include climate change, migration, sustainable development, populism / nationalism, poverty reduction, and struggles for rights.
Prerequisite:
Students should have completed an introductory course to the social sciences (either SAM1000 or SAM1210) before taking the course.
Studiekrav
In order to receive a final assessment, the student must:
- take an active part in a minimum of 75 % of the formal teaching activities
- have approved an outline (1 page) for the individual written essay that constitutes the final assessment of the course
- have approved a draft of the individual written essay (minimum 1500 words) and submit written feedback on the drafts of other students
- participate in the electronic evaluation of the course if such evaluation is stipulated in the relevant term
When course requirements are not fulfilled, this will count as one examination attempt, unless the student withdraws before the set deadline (1 May/November).
Avsluttende vurdering/eksamen
The final grade for this course is given on the basis of an individual written essay (2500-3500 words). This essay is a revised version of the draft essay submitted as a course requirement. The course and final exam will be graded A-F. In order to receive a final assessment, the student must fulfill the course requirements within the fixed deadline.
