The Hermetic Sciences in the Way of Hermes: Worldview and Practices

A body of texts in Latin and Greek dealing with astrology, astro-botanical medicine, alchemy and magic is attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, the Hellenistic syncretism between the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. These so-called “occult sciences” have been mostly overlooked in the last 75 years of scholarship. The present talk will show how such texts were used in antiquity to make real the presence of invisible divine powers, and to deal with the anxieties and health-crises of those who believed in such powers.
