"Collaboration, Gender and Imagined Authorship of Ancient Jewish Texts"
The scholarly consensus on the production of texts in antiquity has shifted in the recent years. Several scholars have begun to highlight texts as products of collaborative efforts rather than the results of an individual author. Thus, the studies raise new questions about women’s involvement in text production in antiquity. I will first demonstrate how women’s unrecognized scribal activities feed the theory of a single male author. Second, I will discuss how the recent developments in the studies on scribalism encourage us to rethink women as intellectual collaborators who participated in text production in antiquity.
