"Violent Apocalypticism and National Myths: The Reception History of John Ball and the English Uprising of 1381."
John Ball was the most famous priest of the 1381 English uprising known as the Peasants' Revolt. He preached an apocalyptic message of violent retribution against the lords and church leaders, with the expectation that serfdom would then end and England be transformed and run in the interests of peasants. This talk will provide an overview of the reception history of John Ball in relation to understandings of England, from John Ball the seditious, demonic threat to the realm through John Ball the constitutionalist 'from below' to John Ball the originator of English socialism.
