Apocrypha, Magic, Liturgy: The Multiple Identities of the Prayer of Mary at Bartos
For the past three years, I have been part of the APOCRYPHA project at the University of Oslo, working on the relationship between apocryphal works preserved in Coptic and associated practices, particularly liturgical and magical practices. In this talk, I will present some of the results from my research, focussing on one work, the so-called Prayer of Mary at Bartos, its multiple identities, and its place in people’s daily lives in Late Antique and Early Islamic Egypt.
