Mormonism and the Varieties of Christian Nationalism in America
Mormonism is often referred to as the “American religion.” It was born on US soil, appropriated many US ideals, and remains headquartered in the US West. Its founding scripture, the Book of Mormon, even categorizes the American continent as sacred land that hosted Christianity centuries before Europe. Yet the faith has had a complicated relationship with its host country, at times being outcasts and at other times embracing the patriotic label. This lecture will introduce the key tensions of Mormonism’s long history with the United States, including its awkward and increasingly contested place among today’s Christian nationalists.
MF CASR is pleased to invite to Benjamin Park's open lecture. Benjamin E. Park received his PhD from the University of Cambridge, teaches at Sam Houston State University, and is author or editor of five books. His most recent book, American Zion: A New History of Mormonism, received the American Society of Church History’s Phillip Schaff Prize for Best Book in the History of Christianity.
