Information for Examiners on the Use of Artificial Intelligence
AI Regulations
MF’s information for students regarding the use of AI is available here:
MF has its own guidelines for source referencing designed to make unauthorized use of AI more difficult. These guidelines state that:
- Relevant course literature must be used as sources in the submission.
- In-text citations must include page numbers if available.
See the guidelines for more details:
Characteristics of Unauthorized Use of AI
The main indicators of unauthorized use of AI are:
- Sources other than the course literature may have been used.
- In-text citations may lack page numbers, refer to incorrect pages, or otherwise cite content inaccurately. Citations may also be missing entirely.
- Errors in the bibliography: fictitious sources, incorrect author names, incorrect publishers, etc.
There are other indicators, but these are the most important in the context of grading, as they relate to formal errors. Language that appears AI-generated is not in itself a formal error.
What to Look for When Grading
- Presence or absence of relevant course literature
- Whether citations include page numbers, and whether page references to course literature are accurate
- Check “metadata” in the bibliography and in-text citations
- Otherwise, assess submissions in good faith unless you have concrete grounds for suspicion. Errors in “metadata” and citations are concrete.
What to Do if You Suspect Unauthorized Use of AI
- Always notify the exam office at sensor@mf.no
- Complete the grading. If you identify violations of formal requirements, such as missing references to course literature or other serious issues with source use, you may assign a grade of F. The justification for the result can be based on the breach of formal requirements.
