Before departure
It is important to plan your exchange well, and to get an overview of everything that needs to be arranged before leaving abroad.
Financing
Lånekassen can grant loans to cover studies abroad, such as travel and accommodation, as well as support for school fees for those for whom it is applicable. On Lånekassen's website you will find information on how to apply for support for part-time studies abroad and what must be attached to the application.
Students traveling on an Erasmus or Nordplus agreement can apply for a separate grant. Other scholarships and grants often have early application deadlines. You should investigate opportunities to get such support early, preferably a year before the planned start of your studies (Norwegian pages):
Legathåndboken
Legatsiden
Forskningsrådet
Nord-Amerika Foreningen
Det norske Fulbright-kontoret
Residence
Many host institutions help the exchange students find accommodation. You will get information about the arrangements at each university when you get nominated.
Visa
Visa rules and procedures vary from country to country, and it's a good idea to check this as early as possible so you know what documents are needed. Applying for a visa is your responsibility, and you should contact the embassy of the country you are traveling to to obtain updated information, or see the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' websites.
The immigration authorities in several countries require a financial guarantee. A loan certificate from Lånekassen is sufficient.
Insurance
Health insurance:
When you apply for support from Lånekassen for studies abroad, you automatically become a member of the National Insurance Scheme during your stay abroad. During your stay, you have the right to cover healthcare services.
If you need confirmation of this right, or have questions about the right to cover healthcare services, you must contact Helfo utland
Travel insurance:
It is important to be aware that you must have additional insurance (travel insurance). This is mandatory for all MF students going on exchange. Folketrygden gives the right to cover health services, but does not cover, for example, repatriation in the event of illness. If you sign up as a member of ANSA (Association of Norwegian Students Abroad), you can buy their insurance which covers certain conditions that Folketrygden does not cover.
You can also contact different insurance companies directly to check their offers.
Vaccines
Find out if you need to take any vaccinations before you travel.
Semester registration at MF
Remember that you must approve the education plan and pay the semester fee to MF when you are on exchange, for the current semester.
Preparedness
In the event of an accident, it is important that you know what to do. Download the Nødnummer app from the Norwegian Seamen's Church. This is a free app that collects most of what you need if you are exposed to an unwanted incident when you are travelling.
Save the number of the Seamen's Church 24-hour emergency telephone number: +47 951 19 181
