I am professor of the Study of Religion and Director of MF CASR. I was trained in “Religionsvitenskap”/the Study of Religions at the University of Bergen (Dr. art., 2007), specializing in Jewish literatures of Late Antiquity. My current research interests span the research history and academic imagination of early Judaism, the Christian manuscript transmission of early Jewish texts, past and present apocalyptic fiction, the epistemologies and ethics of textual scholarship, manuscript studies and cultural heritage, as well as public scholarship on religion.
I have published widely on the apocalyptic text, 2 Baruch, on imaginary books, paratextual practices, Material Philology and media history, Syriac manuscripts, as well as on religion and popular culture. My most recent books are Invisible Manuscripts: Textual Scholarship and the Survival of 2 Baruch (2021) and Working with Manuscripts: A Guide for Textual Scholars (with Brent Nongbri, forthcoming 2025). My current book projects include Fragments of Improbable Books, Dovre faller: Endetid på norsk, and Early Jewish Literature in Christian Manuscript Transmission.
