SAM2050 provides an in-depth study of one or more "big questions" in international politics. The exact topic may vary from year to year and will be announced at the beginning of the semester. Examples from previous semesters include the end of the liberal world order and how the strategic rivalry between the United States and China affects global politics. The course offers a theoretically diverse and historically grounded approach to the topic under study. Instruction is organized around close readings of texts discussed in seminars, and a high degree of student participation is expected.

Study requirements
To qualify for the final assessment, the student must:
- Attend and actively participate in at least 80% of the teaching sessions.
- Receive a passing grade on an oral presentation.
Students who do not fulfill these course requirements will not be permitted to take the exam. To avoid using up an examination attempt, the student must withdraw from the exam by the withdrawal deadline of 1 November.
Final assessment/Exam
The examination for SAM2050 is a 20-minute oral exam. The exam consists of two parts:
Part 1: The candidate gives a short presentation (5 minutes) on a pre-assigned topic, followed by follow-up questions from the examiner (5 minutes).
Part 2: The candidate answers questions from the examiner regarding two other topics from the course syllabus (10 minutes).
In order to sit for the exam, students must have fulfilled all course requirements within the specified deadlines.
