The course introduces philosophical and religious perspectives on war and warfare, drawing on political philosophy, history, and the study of religion. It includes both normative and descriptive approaches. Students critically examine how traditions in religion and ethics have addressed the moral dilemmas of war, using the just war tradition as a framework. This includes moral evaluation through the categories of ius ad bellum, ius in bello, and ius post bellum, as well as questions of responsibility and punishment. The course compares major philosophical and religious traditions and their approaches to conflict, violence, and peace. Throughout the semester, students analyze key texts and films to explore cultural similarities and differences in ethical views on war, fostering critical and comparative reasoning about the moral relevance of war in modern conflicts.

Study requirements
For å få avsluttende vurdering må studenten:
- delta på minst 75% av undervisningen
- levere og få godkjent en gruppeoppgave på ca. 4000 ord innen fastsatt frist
Studenter som ikke oppfyller studiekravene, kan ikke gå opp til eksamen i emnet. For ikke å bruke et eksamensforsøk må studenten aktivt trekke sin vurderingsmelding til emnet innen trekkfristen 1. mai.
Final assessment/Exam
Emnet har skoleeksamen på seks timer. For å få avsluttende vurdering må studenten innen fastsatt frist ha oppfylt studiekrav.

- Studenten har god kunnskap om rettferdig krig-tradisjonen både slik den utviklet seg i det kristne - Europa og slik den kommer til anvendes som moralfilosofisk rammeverk i dag.
- Studenten har kunnskap om krigens etikk i andre verdensreligioner.
- Studenten har kjennskap til rettferdig krig-tradisjonens forhold til krigens folkerett.
- Studenten har kjennskap til minst ett historisk case, som undersøkes i emnet.

Studenten kan
- Analysere case fra den virkelige verden med hensyn på ius ad bellum og ius in bello
- Gjengi hovedtrekk i utviklingen av rettferdig krig-tradisjonen i det kristne Europa
- Gjengi hovedtrekk i krigens etikk i to andre verdensreligioner
