Condolences Following His Majesty King Harald's passing
It is with great sorrow that we have received the news that His Majesty King Harald V has passed away. MF extends our condolences to the royal family and prays for peace over King Harald’s memory.
We at MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society are deeply saddened by the passing of His Majesty King Harald. He had a unique ability to bring people together. Through his personal way of being king, he demonstrated closeness, care, vulnerability, humor, and a rare ability to share in the joys and sorrows of the people.
At the memorial service following the terror attacks of 22 July, 2011, he expressed what many know him for: “As a father, grandfather, and husband, I can only begin to imagine your pain. As the King of this country, I feel with each and every one of you.”
King Harald was also a king who clearly acknowledged Norway’s diversity. In his speech at the Royal Couple’s garden party in 2016, he reminded us that Norway is the sum of all the people who live here, with different backgrounds, beliefs, and life experiences. What unites us is not where we come from, but that we belong to the same community.
For King Harald, the Christian faith was a quiet yet clear source of belonging. We at MF remember him with sorrow and gratitude. Our thoughts are with the royal family and those closest to the King.
We pray for peace over King Harald’s memory.
