Exphil is divided into two parts of 5 ECTS each:
Part 1: History of philosophy and science (5 ECTS)
In part 1 the students work with important thinkers in the history of philosophy. There will be a focus on central philosophical questions relevant for the history of science. A good number original texts are read together with secondary literature. The course is oriented around selected problems, and invites the students to reflect on these.
Part 2: Ethics (5 ECTS)
In part 2 students mainly work systematically with ethical problems. Important ethical theories are to be used to discuss concrete problems. Meta-ethics is also included to give perspective to discussion on ethics and morality. The course will include perspectives from Europe, Asia and Africa.

Study requirements
In order to receive a final assessment, the student must:
- Submit a book report (1000 words) on a chapter from The great conversation : a historical introduction to philosophy
- Attend at least 60% of the lectures
- Participate in the in-depth evaluation of the course if such evaluation is stipulated in the relevant term.
In order to receive a final assessment, the student must fulfill the course requirements within the fixed deadline.
When course requirements are not fulfilled, this will count as one examination attempt, unless the student withdraws before the set deadline (1 May).
Final assessment/Exam
The final assessment for this course is based on a written school exam (4 hours). The course and final exam will be graded A-F.

Learning outcome
Part 1: History of philosophy and science (5 ECTS) KNOWLEDGE The student has:
- good knowledge about important thinkers and traditions in the history of philosophy and science.
- knowledge of how certain theories are meant to solve certain problems
- some knowledge of various aspects of ethics in different cultures
SKILLS The student can:
- use original texts in discussions of problems
- argue objectively and justify their own interpretations and positions
- critically reflect on the theological relevance of certain philosophical problems.
Part 2: Ethics (5 ECTS)
KNOWLEDGE The student has:
- good knowledge about important ethical theories
- good knowledge of meta-ethics
- knowledge of different aspects of ethics in different cultures
SKILLS The student can:
- critically discuss ethical problems
- critically reflect on and justify their own positions in ethical questions
- Read scholarly literature and extract relevant points from the text
Overlapping courses
EX1011: Examen philosophicum overlaps completely with EX1010: Examen philosophicum. Students who have already completed EX1010 will receive 0 credit points (ECTS) for EX1011 on their transcript of records or diploma. MF therefore recommends not to combine these courses.
