The course provides an introduction to Classical Arabic grammar and to texts written in Classical Arabic. The aim is for students to develop basic reading skills with the aid of philological tools. The course also introduces short text excerpts from different periods.
The course provides the basis for taking PHI2152 Classical Arabic 2 (spring). PHI2151 and PHI2152 constitute a complete introductory course in Classical Arabic.
Structure and organisation:
Teaching is normally delivered as weekly lectures, with the main emphasis on writing system, phonetics, and grammar. Classes are normally scheduled in the late afternoon/evening. Independent work between each lecture is expected.
Prerequisites: None.

To receive final assessment, the student must:
Students who do not meet these requirements will not be permitted to take the exam in the course. To avoid using an exam attempt, the student must actively withdraw their exam registration for the course by the withdrawal deadline of November 1.
Final assessment/Exam
The course is assessed by final approval of fulfilled course requirements. The course is assessed as "pass" / "fail".
