Printing from laptops
Shortcuts
It is possible to print to the Uniflow/Followme-printer from your own PC or Mac.
Unfortunately printing from Chromebooks won't work. Make a PDF and put on a USB memory stick, then you can print directly from the copy machines.
Remember
- Your account must be activated to be able to print.
- You should be logged into Wi-Fi/eduroam at MF to access the printers, you can not access the printer if you are at home or are connected to mobile data on your mobile phone.
- When you print for the first time, you must connect your student card to your account to retrieve prints.
Please note that the screenshots are in Norwegian, but the icons and windows should look the same in the English version of Windows and Mac.
Printing from Windows
These instructions are for students. Employees with Windows should contact IT for help.
- Install all the Windows updates, printing will not work if you don't have the newest Windows updates installed.
- Restart your laptop after the updates are installed.
- Press Win + R to open the "Run"-dialogue.
- Type or paste \\uniflow.stud.mf.no then press Enter
- You will be asked about username and password, use "MFSTUDAD\(your MF username)" as username, other than that the password should be the same (like Canvas/Feide).
- You will get a list of printers. Doubleclick on the printer named Followme.
- The printer will now be installed, that will take a few minutes.
- Then you will be able to print to the printer Followme and retrieve printouts with your students card in the usual way. Remember, if your student card is not connected to your printing account yet, it must be done the first time you print.
Important: When printing from Macs, it defaults to color mode!
If you print from Macs and fetch your print jobs on the Canon copy machines, make sure to select "Options" and "Black & White" before printing to save money.
Note that if you print on the HP printers, it will automatically count as Black & White print jobs.
Printing from Mac
We have now made a program to install the printer automatically.
- Download this file (Install MF Printer.zip, 460 kB)
- Unpack the file and run it
Note: It is possible that the Mac will warn about an unsafe program, in that case you can try:- Hold down CTRL while double-clicking the file, that way you should get an option to run it anyway
- If that does not work, you will need to go into System Settings > Privacy and Security, then scroll down to the bottom where you should see "Install MF printer", click on the button to allow the app, then try to run it again
- Write your MF username
- Then the printer "FollowmeMF" should be installed
Keep this program on your Mac, because Mac still has an issue of forgetting your MF username when it install Mac updates. This causes your print jobs to be deleted when you print.
If that happens, run this program again to reinstall the printer with your MF username again.
Manual method
In case you cannot use the program above, here is the manual method for installing the printer:
- Open System Preferences and click on "Printers and Scanners."
- Click the plus sign at the bottom left to add a new printer.
- The window should be opened to add new printers. To get the "Advanced" option, hold down Ctrl, click on the toolbar and select "Customize toolbar ..." (If you already have the "Advanced" button there, you can jump to point 5.)
- Drag the "Advanced" button from the new window into toolbar and then press "Done".
- Press the Advanced button and select the following options:
Type: LPD/LPR-host or printer
Device: Other device
URL: lpd://username@uniflow.stud.mf.no/FollowmeMAC - Note: replace username with your own MF username, the same one you use in Canvas
Name: Followme
Location: MF
Use: Generic PostScript-printer - Press Add
- Check the box for Duplex Unit and press OK
- Then you will be able to print to the printer FollowMe and retrieve printouts with your students card in the usual way. Remember, if your student card is not connected to your printing account yet, it must be done the first time you print.
